* Baran *

A friend shared with me a movie directed by Majid Majidi; an Iranian director famous for his award-winning movie; Children of Heaven. The movie was titled 'Baran' and it had nothing to do with the Malay meaning of that word ;) It means 'rain'.
The movie started off with Lateef, an ordinary young construction worker who is childish and a bit short-tempered. Then, along came Rahmat; who was there to replace 'his' father, Najaf, who fell from the second floor and broke his leg. At first, Rahmat was supposed to be working alongside the other workers (Lateef's job is to cook, make tea and was the dishes). But, after Rahmat accidentally poured plaster all over another worker, Mehmar (the boss) was ready to fire 'him'. As it happens, Mehmar is an amazingly considerate and reasonable man. So, he gave Lateef's job to Rahmat and now Lateef has to carry cement and arrange bricks like everyone else. From then on, Lateef hated Rahmat. This is when the story gets interesting; because of his hatred to this little kid who stole his job, he found love. Oh yeah, this is NOT a gay story. So, watch it!
For some of you, after you watch this film, you might just think that this is a simple love story of two people who are not meant to be together. But, for me, this is a story of a boy who grew up to be a man who understood the meaning of love. The way he sacrifices himself while hoping for nothing in return is just too admirable and the way he can just let go while smiling is sad but beautiful. This movie centres on Lateef, but this does not make it boring. In fact, it makes you appreciate the character more, because you see him growing up and you follow him through all the ups and downs...and, yeah, the heroin did not have any dialogue and she did not 'sedar keheroan hero dia'. Another film that left me with this kind of feeling is The Painted Veil.
So, all in all, thanks to you! I had a wonderful time watching an amazing film with my awesome housemates. You can say that we have found a new meaning for love; especially Yue. LOL. She was really emotional when we were watching Road to Guantanamo; I admire her spirits. Keep it up, girl!
